What is fibre and why should I switch?

What is fibre broadband?

Fibre broadband is a type of high-speed broadband. It uses fibre optic cables, which are better at transferring data than standard copper cables. And by data, we’re talking about online gaming and streaming films and music. Basically, you can do all the things you love on the internet, just faster.

How does Fibre Broadband work?

It uses a network of fibre optic cables to deliver high-speed data over greater distances. The data travels down the cables at the speed of light (literally). This means you’re more likely to get faster download speeds and a more reliable connection to the internet. FTTP stands for Fibre To The Premises. It’s sometimes known as FTTH (Fibre To The Home), ultrafast broadband, or full fibre broadband. With FTTP, fibre optic cables run right into your home, which means much faster fibre broadband.

The existing copper cables were originally designed to transmit voice/phone calls only, and they don’t align with the evolution of the digital landscape of the future.

FTTP broadband is being rolled out across the Isle of Man and more than 99% of the Island’s premises will have access to fibre broadband by 2024. Use our post code checker to find out if it’s currently available for you, and if it’s not available yet, it will be coming soon so keep checking back.

Check fibre availability at your address.

Enter your postcode below to see if your premises has access to fibre broadband.

The Department for Enterprise has provided funding for the National Broadband Plan to bring fibre connectivity to remote and rural properties in the Isle of Man. This project, initiated in July 2020, is set to conclude by August 2024, eensures that 99% of these properties have access to fibre broadband from their chosen provider. Island-wide, over 40,000 premises now have access to the new fibre network.

Use our Post-Code lookup tool to determine if fibre is available now, or planned for your area.  The unavailability of fibre at your postcode may be due to factors such as the need for planning permissions for the installation of poles, third-party support, or other considerations that currently prevent specifying a definitive date.
